Frank Simms
Frank and his brother George were the legendary backing vocalists on Bowie’s 1983 Lets Dance album. (They also sing on Madonna’s “Material Girl”, amongst other hits). I was lucky enough to meet and interview Frank in New York, March 2008, during pre-production for the “Down Under the Moonlight” and “Bowie’s Waiata” documentaries.
His energy and enthusiasm made this session one of my all time favourites interviews. Frank is also known as a “voice over” for U.S. radio and television commercials – so it was equally fascinating to talk to him about this aspect of his career. These clips feature extended material that never made it to the final documentaries and provide a real insight into the “Serious Moonlight” tour.
His website’s well worth a visit.
Frank’s animated showreel is particularly good too! Watch out for the blue Bowie in the “pop songs” category…
This next interview contains further recollections from Frank Simms about his work as a backing vocalist on David Bowies “Lets Dance” album and “Serious Moonlight” world tour of 1983. Edited sections of this audio were used in the radio documentary “Down Under The Moonlight”, broadcast on Radio Hauraki, New Zealand, November 22nd 2008
This final interview specifically discusses vocalist Frank Simms work on the David Bowie album, Lets Dance, produced by the legendary Nile Rodgers. Visit; www.nilerodgers.com
