Rob Mayes
Yet another contribution to Radio New Zealand’s “Musical Chairs” series… This time focusing on musician and producer Rob Mayes. Rob is a stalwart of the Christchurch music scene – and started Failsafe Records, a New Zealand based label specialising in guitar based acts, waaay back in 1984 – which now has an impressive catalogue of over 40 releases.
Rob’s been a member of bands such as Dolphin, Throw, Springloader and Kimo. He’s a legend behind the production desk – working with an eclectic cross section of bands (including my own, “Changeling”, back in the early nineties). Live mixing is another skill Mayes has developed – working for many years as the sound mixer for seminal NZ band “The Bats” and accompanying them on various world tours.
